Have SCAG.     Will Travel.
Hi, I’m Doug, and for many of you stopping by here, I’m your neighbor, literally. I live in Urbana, right off Roderick Road. Since I only market to mid-size or larger property owners in my area, I’m guessing if you’re here, you received my local mailing, saw my truck, one of my big SCAG mowers, or maybe one of our neighbors mentioned my service. Either way, thanks for visiting.
First, to address the headline above, yes, I do have a SCAG (more than one, actually) just like the one pictured, and I do travel with it. Just not very far, unlike Paladin, the hero in that old 1960s TV western series, Have Gun, Will Travel, who     went anywhere, far and wide, to take on his work as a hired gun. I try to stick a      whole lot closer to home. And, I wouldn’t hurt a soul.

So Who Am I and What's This All About?Â
Not to give you my life’s story—that’s already part of an altogether different website—but just so you might better understand what this small, one-man service business is all about, and to see how it could be beneficial to you, I’ve written a few words. Maybe a few too many for some, but for those considering my service, getting to know me a little more first, might help make the difference. So, I can only hope you’ll take a minute and read on.Â

So I reached out to a couple neighbors, found some interest and next thing you know I began this little mowing service. Sounds crazy, right? Yet, it's an ideal thing for me. I control my own time and schedule. (Well, me and Mother Nature.) My intent from the start was always to just mow a few large lawns each week. It still is. Too many, and the joy would likely turn to pressure. I had enough of that for over 40 years. Nope. Not anymore, thank you. Instead, I strive to have only a handful or two of good customers, each of whom can feel they are important to me and not just another property on a long roster. No, my goal is a more personal connection with my property owners.
Simple.
Well, I knew I enjoyed mowing large properties. (I have one myself.) That attraction began many, many years ago, back when I was in college and working summers mowing fairways and greens on a golf course aboard some pretty high-end precision equipment. I loved it then and still do today. It gives me great satisfaction to see the finished results. It’s truly an art when done correctly, in my opinion. As a former art director/creative director and stickler for details, I can surely appreciate what it takes to make things just right. Having a couple of the most respected mowers in the industry doesn't hurt either.Â
Each time I buckled into my mower and pulled it out of the shed, I felt like an artist with a blank canvas in front of me, excited to engage the clutch of the blades. When I was finished mowing the property, there was so much satisfaction at the fine work I had just completed, yet also a touch of disappointment. Disappointment that the mowing was over. I always wanted more grass to mow.
Golf has been a passion of mine, so it seemed an ideal avenue to work my way into a happy retirement, while still being able to earn a few bucks. Well, part-time somehow quickly grew to a nearly full-time role with managerial duties added in, and within six months, I found myself in what seemed like a third career, while my plans of retiring got put on hold for a few years. Eventually though, with new management taking over, my responsibilities at the club and my need to be there five days a week receded, giving me some of my precious retirement time back. Â
However, turns out, I still wasn’t ready for full retirement. I wanted something more. I needed a purpose. I needed to be excited about going to work again and I certainly needed more income. What could I do?
It’s kind of simple, really. And honestly, that’s how I like it. I’m partially-retired, or at least I was before I decided to jump into this little mowing operation. A few years back, after two very different and somewhat successful careers spanning over 40 years, I thought I’d ease my way into retirement rather than just stop working, cold turkey. So, I took a part-time position in the Pro Shop at a high-end, well-respected golf course in the local area. Â
